When Stephanie Csaszar opened a physical bookstore in 2018, she had next to no online presence. But as the pandemic progressed and her own health deteriorated, Csaszar made the shift to a fully online store. Today, Death By TBR Books specializes in genre fiction and operates out of Csaszar’s home in Washington. I sat down with Csaszar to learn how she came to bookselling, how Death By TBR has evolved, and where it’s going in the future.

Spiral Circle, a metaphysical bookstore in Orlando, Florida, will celebrate its 50th year of operation in 2025. Founded in 1975, the shop has long been a little haven near downtown Orlando. I met with owner Julie Wilder, and Christina Ray, intuitive reader and book buyer, to learn more about Spiral Circles’ past and future, as well as the unique challenges of running a metaphysical bookstore.

Cupboard Maker Books is another store that came highly recommended for its annual Bookstore Romance Day celebrations! Located in Enola, Pennsylvania, the bookstore has been in operation for 26 years. I sat down with owner Michelle Haring to learn more about her, her store, and the plan for this Bookstore Romance Day.

Elliott Bay Book Company is a landmark of the Seattle indie scene and is undoubtedly one of the more well-known indie bookstores in the country. With more than 150,000 titles across some 20,000 square feet, Elliott Bay is massive by indie standards.

Linzi Murray is the founder and owner of Reading in Public, a bookstore and cafe located in West Des Moines, Iowa. Murray drew on her graphic design background and her lifelong love of reading in order to build the beautiful and welcoming shop she has today.

Dr. Clover Tamayo (they/siya) is the founder and owner of Clover Daydreams in Tacoma, Washington. As a queer, disabled, Filipino American, Tamayo created Clover Daydreams with the goal of being a safe and inclusive book space and curates a collection that centers queer, trans, BIPOC, disabled, and marginalized voices. Tamayo sat down with me to discuss the origin of Clover Daydreams and the store’s unique environment and services.
